Dystonia literally means a disorder in the tension of a muscle. Muscle tension is often too high, but at other times normal.
The dystonia is not only characterized by involuntary, alternating muscle tension, but also by a disturbance in the normal cooperation between the relevant muscles. This creates spinning , wringing movements and abnormal postures also of one or more parts of the body. The dystonic movements can occur in all parts of the body, both at rest and during any motion carried. There are many different types of dystonia. This website focuses primarily on cervical dystonia. Further information on other types of dystonia, visit the Dystonia Society's website.
